Summaries for patients. Tolerability of meropenem in patients with penicillin allergy.

چکیده

R. Valluzzi, and J.-L. Guéant. What is the problem and what is known about it so far? Allergic reactions to the antibiotic penicillin are common. Meropenem is an antibiotic that fights many of the same infections as penicillin. Meropenem may be an option for patients who are allergic to penicillin. However, meropenem and penicillins have similar chemical structures; therefore, doctors often avoid using meropenem in patients who are allergic to penicillin. Information about the frequency of meropenem allergy in patients with penicillin allergy is limited. With some drugs, such as penicillin and meropenem, doctors can perform a “skin test” for allergic reactions by administering small amounts of the drug under the skin. It is important to know about antibiotic options for patients who cannot take penicillin because of allergy.

Is it safe to use carbapenems in patients with a history of allergy to penicillin?

OBJECTIVES The purpose of this retrospective study was to ascertain the clinical safety of administering carbapenems, namely imipenem/cilastatin and meropenem, in patients with a history of penicillin allergy compared with administering carbapenems in patients with no reported penicillin allergy. Carbapenems are similar in chemical structure to the penicillins and therefore are associated with ...

Incidence of carbapenem-associated allergic-type reactions among patients with versus patients without a reported penicillin allergy.

This retrospective analysis sought to determine the comparative incidence of cross-reactivity associated with carbapenem antibiotic treatment among patients with versus those without penicillin allergy. We sought to determine whether the incidence of cross-reactivity is different between imipenem-cilastatin and meropenem. A total of 211 patients were treated with a carbapenem antibiotic. Includ...

IgE-mediated hypersensitivity to cephalosporins: cross-reactivity and tolerability of penicillins, monobactams, and carbapenems.

BACKGROUND There have been few studies regarding the cross-reactivity and tolerability of penicillins, aztreonam, and carbapenems in large samples of subjects with cephalosporin allergy. OBJECTIVE We sought to evaluate the possibility of using penicillins, monobactams, and carbapenems in subjects with cephalosporin allergy who especially require them. METHODS We conducted a prospective stud...

Drug allergy evaluation for betalactam hypersensitivity: Cross-reactivity with cephalosporines, carbapenems and negative predictive value.

BACKGROUND There are no studies on cross-reactivity of betalactams among patients allergic to penicillin, or on the negative predictive value (NPV) of penicillin allergy evaluation from Arabian Gulf countries. OBJECTIVE We aimed to assess the role and NPV of drug provocation test (DPT) for betalactam hypersensitivity reactions in patients referred for allergy evaluation in Kuwait. METHODS S...
